The faces of Harley Race

Matt Murphy

Matt Murphy, the first graduate of the Harley Race Wrestling Academy, debuted as Matt "the Missile" Murphy on September 24, 1999. During the next seven months, Murphy enjoyed a seven-month winning streak that included victories over some of the toughest competitors in WLW as well as an impressive showing against Mark Jindrak and an upset victory over former NWA/WCW World Tag Team Champion "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton. Murphy quickly established himself as one of the most popular and versatile wrestlers in WLW.

While enjoying success as a singles wrestler, "the Missile" also teamed occasionally with Trevor Rhodes, earning victories against the tandem of "the Player" Brian Logan & WCW superstar Disco Inferno as well as former WCW World Tag Team Champions the Harris Brothers. A knee injury placed the high-flyer on the disabled list and, one week before his scheduled return to the ring, Murphy sneak-attacked Rhodes during a match, sparking one of the longest and most intense feuds in World League Wrestling history. The two young stars battled in Texas Death Matches, Leather Strap Matches, a First-Blood Match, and a host of other singles and tag team matches.

Murphy evolved into "All That" Matt Murphy and joined the Gold Exchange, teaming with Superstar Steve to win three World Tag Team Championships. He appeared on WWE television, teaming with Steve against Kaientai, and squared off against Justin Credible in Credible's WWE television debut. Murphy was also selected from an international talent search to compete in the inaugural Pro-Wrestling NOAH GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship Tournament, which included wrestling stars KENTA, Naomichi Marufuji, Juventud Guerrera, and B.J. Whitmer, in his first of three trips to compete in Japan.

Murphy was on the fast track to stardom, being named to the WrestleAmerica Indy 30 as one of the top wrestling prospects in the world. He also became a regular in IWA Mid-South, wrestling future stars Ace Steel, C.M. Punk, Chris Hero, and B.J. Whitmer. Murphy was enjoying his third World Tag Team Title reign in WLW when an automobile accident ended his career on December 8, 2002. He wrote an autobiography, The Story of a Nobody and the Pursuit to Become a Somebody, and left the wrestling business for several years. He returned full-time in 2007 as the producer and host of WLW's television program.
