While growing up in a small farming town in
North Dakota, professional wrestling seemed like a faraway dream. Dakota
spent his school years watching wrestling on television, earning Eagle Scout
status and becoming a 4-year varsity letterman in football, basketball and
track. But the honor student, who earned All State recognition in football,
track and All District honors in basketball, turned down athletic and
academic collegiate scholarships in order to pursue his childhood dream,
wrestling.
Dakota started training in nearby Minnesota under the tutelage of
Olympian strongman Ken Patera and made his wrestling debut on February 7,
1999. He continued to compete throughout the upper Midwest for the next 3½
years, while amassing such career highlights as headlining the first ever
pro wrestling event in his hometown and participating in a major wrestling
tour of Australia as a troubleshooting referee.
Dakota would travel to Missouri to train and compete for Harley
Race and World League Wrestling for the first time in the summer of 2002.
Despite returning to college at North Dakota State University that fall and
eventually graduating as a highly decorated and nationally recognized
student of civil engineering, Dakota continued his regular travels to WLW
because wrestling is where his heart was. He would soon become a popular
regular on WLW events and find a niche for himself in tag team wrestling.
Dakota partnered with Cody Hawk for a short reign as tag team champions in
mid-2004, then teamed with "Wild" Wade Chism to regain the gold later that
year for a successful reign that lasted nearly six months.
In 2006 Dakota traveled to Japan for three months to train and
compete for Pro Wrestling NOAH. The training was rigorous, but his hard work
and dedication earned him both a pinfall victory for his team in his Budokan
Hall debut and the respect of many of his Japanese opponents. His
high-flying barefoot style influenced by Kevin Von Erich would gain him many
fans in the Far East. He returned to the United States as a smarter and more
aggressive competitor. Since his return, he has been a prominent member of
the WLW roster and a favorite among many fans.
