The Drill
Instructor
 |
Being a professional wrestler was a
lifelong dream of the Drill Instructor. Former NWA World Champ and St.
Louis/Kansas City promoter Pat OConnor was a close family friend who had a big
influence on the DI. In 1986, OConnor introduced the future Drill Instructor to his
partner in the St. Louis and Kansas City promotions Harley Race. "When I got out of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1994, I decided to
pursue my dream of being a professional wrestler. I was trained by several people in St.
Louis. The main ones were my tag team partner Johnny Jett, John Blackheart, Frankie-D, and
"The Human Wrecking Ball" Pete Madden. I had received extensive training in
hand-to-hand combat in the Marine Corps, and these guys helped me refine those skills and
use them in the ring." |
| The Drill Instructor has squared off
against high profile wrestlers such as Cowboy Bob Orton, the Iron Sheik, Hacksaw Butch
Reed, Tommy Rogers and Abdullah the Butcher. "Abdullah is definitely the toughest
that I have stepped into the ring against. I would like the opportunity to do it
again
now that I have faced him, I would have a much better thought out plan of
attack." The match turned into a wild brawl, with Harley Race finally restoring order
after Abdullah had laid out the DI and three WLW referees. "There are not many people
that Harley would come to the ring for and start punching his way through. I was honored
that he came out to help me like that."
The Drill Instructor is aware of the responsibilities
that go along with being a wrestler. "One of my greatest pleasures in wrestling is
the children, when they come and ask for autographs. You can see it in their eyes that you
are larger than life to them. In todays world, we need role models. I hope I can
make a difference to them. That is why I am the Drill Instructor. It comes naturally.
Believing in your country, doing the right thing always, and never giving up."
